NAU
MAI, HAERE MAI
WELCOME ONE AND ALL
The story of Wairakei Terraces, is the story
of Ngatoroirangi, Ngati Tuwharetoa and a shared vision of
co-operation between the state owned enterprise Contact
Energy (now privately owned), and a small group of local
Maori who possessed the passion and the commitment.
In 1996, a relationship began between Contact
Energy and NETCOR to redevelop the original Wairakei Terraces
and geysers that had disappeared with the construction of
the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station in the 1950’s.
The terraces have been initially fashioned
by mans hand. Mother Nature (Papatuanuku) must now take
her course to perfect the production of colours and overlaying
of silica to form magnificent terraces reminiscent of the
Tarawera pink and white versions that were destroyed in
1886.
We invite you to take part in a leisurely
one hour guided or self governed tour of the Wairakei Terraces
Walkway, and enjoy the stories and history of New Zealand,
Ngatoroirangi and Ngati Tuwharetoa, conveyed to you through
the impressive carved features throughout the walkway. Other
features include the ‘Te Kiri o Hinekai’ Stream
and (Honeymoon) Pool, famous for its therapeutic and healing
powers, a soothing footbath, blue alum pools, red mud pools,
geyser, animal park and carving house (Whare Whakairo),
featuring carvers at work.
Experience also an evening of Maori Culture.
Beginning with a traditional Welcome (Powhiri) and awe inspiring
Challenge (Wero), Speeches (Whai Korero) and Song (Waiata).
A tour is then conducted of the Wairakei Terraces and living
Maori Village featuring carvers, weavers, tattooists and
musicians. The evening concludes with a traditional ground
cooked Meal (Hangi) and a concert of Song, Dance and Haka.
