As Ngatoroirangi lay dying on the slopes of Ngauruhoe, he called to his sisters in Hawaiiki, (Kuiwai & Haungaroa) to send fire to warm his body. The fire demons they despatched (Te Pupu & Te Hoata), travelled beneath sea and land, surfacing at Whakaari (White Island), Whakarewarea (Rotorua), Waimangu, Waiotapu, Orakei Korako and here in the picturesque Waiora Valley (Wairakei). Spontaneous bursts of steam sent billowing clouds skyward, testifying to the pent up energy beneath the earth in the realm of Ruaumoko, (God of Volcanoes).
